Speech Therapy

Update: Our speech therapist, Alicia Bell, is currently on a leave of absence. We will update this site upon her return!

Supporting all aspects of a child’s well-being is an integral part of our mission here at Parker Place. We are proud to now offer the services of Alicia Bell, M.A., CCC-SLP, who provides one-on-one speech therapy as well as social skills groups for children.

Many children struggle with communication problems which can be treated, or even resolved, with the help of a speech-language pathologist. ASHA (the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association) has an excellent overview of what speech-language pathologists do.

While some school-age children receive speech services in an educational setting, these services are limited in both their scope and their success:

  • Public schools’ legal obligation is to provide specific services as part of students’ right to a “free and appropriate education.” The services are designed to make it possible for students to function in the educational environment. Communication, however, is an essential part of everyday life - not just school - and speech and language skills are necessary in everything a child does.

  • Speech-language pathologists and other allied health professionals within the school system are responsible for working with large numbers of students, often in group settings, and having to manage the diverse challenges and behaviors of the group. As a result, students can spend many years working with a speech-language pathologist within the school system, when they would have progressed much more quickly working with one in private practice.

Alicia offers one-on-one speech therapy in the fun, cheerful environment at Parker Place. She also accepts a number of commercial and state insurances, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Johns Hopkins US Family Health Plan, and multiple Maryland Medicaid plans.
